| dancing with a limp |

I lost my older brother in March. It was a wash of unimaginable pain. There's not a single day that goes by that I don't think of him. I often hear his laugh -- it was this hugely contagious, deep belly-full laugh.

He is close by to me now, lying at the tip of the mountain top on the way to the beach. I visit him to say hi, to tell him I miss him, and that I love him an enormous amount. He is in a pretty place.

I still cry for him. When this happens, I re-read a quote that my friend Caroline shared. San Francisco based author, Anne Lamott, wrote:

“You will lose someone you can’t live without, and your heart will be badly broken, and the bad news is that you never completely get over the loss of your beloved. But this is also the good news. They live forever in your broken heart that doesn’t seal back up. And you come through. It’s like having a broken leg that never heals perfectly—that still hurts when the weather gets cold, but you learn to dance with the limp.”

  1. You have a beautiful heart, Sam. And a beautiful angel for a brother!
